Vintage Turnovers….a finish!

Ta Dah!!!!  What do you think?  I’m very happy with my take on the Vintage Turnover pattern I found here.  I managed to finish it at our Guild’s UFO weekend to attack our stashes of UFO’s in preparation for our biennial Quilt Show at the end of July. My gorgeous friend Dawn helped me by stippling this beauty and I finished it by quilting the flowers and binding…..I’m sooooo happy with how it turned out!  I don’t know if you can see the spiral quilting in the flower centre but if you squint and hold your tongue the right way, you just might!!! A nice, bright yellow for the binding…. ….and my very own touch for the border A pieced backing which is lovely and crinkly AND very snuggable!  A real girly-girl ‘pretty’ that will hold its own in a very male – oriented home! *hee hee hee*……Girls unite! I’ve also been working on my ‘Raggedy Friends’ quilt which is nearing the flimsy stage…..just one block to go and some sashing and borders, which should be done by the weekend…..and no, I haven’t taken any photos yet!!!…..sorry! I do have one other finish but because it’s winging its way south, I can’t divulge too much but I can give you a little sneaky….. I told you it was sneaky…this could be A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G!!!!! Vintage Turnovers….a finish!

The Calm before the storm

  This was what greeted me as I left my house this morning to go to school  to help move things away from windows, unplug electrical items, computers, interactive whiteboards, phones etc in preparation for Cyclone Anthony this evening. It is predicted to cross within 100km of us so we are expecting lots of rain and some strong winds….it is currently only a category 1 with the possibility of it developing into a category 2 before it crosses the coast.  Currently, at a category 1, it is travelling at 120km/hr .  A category 2 storm travels between 125-165km/hr.  You can follow Anthony’s movements here. But at the moment, it is really eerie…..things are calm….there are no birds flying about, the air is relatively still seeing a cyclone is nearing us, the sky is dull and there is little movement about the town.  The car dealers in the main street have moved their display vehicles out of their premises and now, it’s just a waiting game! But we aren’t too concerned with TC Anthony……he’s only a little bubba.  There is a prediction….forecast…..call it what you will…..for a larger cyclone to hit later in the week.  A low currently northwest of Fiji is forecast to develop into a tropical cyclone and move west into the region on Tuesday.  Reports say it could be category 4 or 5…..travelling at over 225km/hr, we could be in for a wild ride!!! Well, with all this build up, what is a girl to do?????  Sew, of course!!! Break time

  Time for a quick break between report cards……for sanity reasons!!! I met up with these two lovelies on Friday whilst in Townsville….. Aren’t they just beautiful?  Of course it’s Jenny and Bloss who took a quick trip down to Townsville to do some Chrissy shopping (much more organised than me!!!) and to have lunch with me (and my two boys)….we had such a lovely time!!! I had the day off to go and visit with my doctor who told me I’m up for some big surgery in March!!!  Well, that means time off work so plenty of stitchy time…..gotta be some bonuses!!!! Our weather has been crazy the last week or so with rain falling in bucketloads…..make that truckloads!…..here’s what it looked like from my place before the sky opened up at 9 oclock yesterday morning, just before I went to the guild meeting… I think it only took minutes before everything was under 2 inches of water (can you tell, I’m a quilter!!!….no metric here!)  just as well I put everything in the car just before I took these photos….however, I did get drenched getting them out!!!!  And these little terrors are hijacking our banana trees….. look at the damage they’re doing…. rotten little so and so’s!!!  These are cane beetles….they come out around October and love sugar cane, but although we have a beautiful crop over the road….they seem to love to demolish my bananas!!!!   gggrrrrrrr!!!   And those rotten cane toads don’t seem to be doing anything to get rid of them (which is why they were brought here in the first place!!)  They really smell bad too when they die….it’s a no win situation!!!! While I was at quilting yesterday, I finished my CSSC gifties which I will post off tomorrow (and send you piccies, Chooky!).  Sorry everyone else, can’t give you any sneakies until they arrive at their destination and make themselves at home under the Christmas tree until Santa comes!!!!….All I can tell you is, it is soooooo hard to send it away…..I’m going to have to make another!!!! I did manage to start this lovely using Moda Sorbet turnovers I bought when the $AUD was at an all time high!!  It is Vintage Turnovers by Kristin Roylance.  If you go and visit Khris, she’ll put you on the right path! Sweet colours….not my normal country style, but I love them!!!  Can’t wait to see this finished!
